If you have noticed a gorgeous pink flower this is the dwarf or “Helen Johnson” Bougainvillea. The most well known and most used in south Florida landscapes of the dwarf variety of bougainvillea is the Helen Johnson bougainvillea. This is a very versatile and hardy shrub to decorate with a gorgeous pink color and you can keep trimmed to 3 feet to keep it nice and full. The blossoms are bright pink with a hint of purple making it very exotic, and newly opening flower bracts have a slight pink-orange tone making it all sorts of bright and gorgeous colors. These shrubs and small hedges are small enough to work as front-of-the-border plants for your tree or palm trees also to line driveways or fill in beds. Dwarf bougainvillea’s have thorns but because they're smaller overall than, they won't tear you to bits and aren’t as stubby. Bougainvilleas bloom on and off all year - even in winter so their color can be enjoyed all year round making your landscape gorgeous. The flower of any bougainvillea plant is actually the tiny white blossom that gives the bougainvillea Helen Johnson a very attractive plant. The colorful parts are the flower bracts that encircle the little white blooms to make it a gorgeous flower. Dwarf bougainvillea care and maintenance requires occasional trimming to shape, especially the Helen Johnson variety, which can grow, somewhat leggy if not trimmed. After each bloom cycle, cut each stem back at least several inches past the bloom area and your plants will stay very full and nice. These shrubs or small hedges are drought-tolerant but do best with regular watering timed to let them dry out in between, if the soil is moist do not water again but if it is drying you should water again. Since these plants come in 3 gallon, the recommended spacing is a foot apart. |
